What is Racial Discrimination?

This is when someone is being treated unfairly or differently because or their race, colour, nationality or ethnic background. It is against the law, and help is available.

What is a minority group?

Minority groups are smaller communities within a society who do not have the same representation as the majority groups.

The Law

It is against the law to discriminate against anyone because of their race, colour, nationality or ethnic background.

Police have been recording racist crime since 1988 and every year the figures are increasing. However, people feel more confident about reporting racially motivated crime now than they did a few years ago, which means that racism may not necessarily be rising. Schools (and workplaces) should have a policy to prevent racism. Have a chat with your teacher is you want to know more.
