18) period pain: please help Isobel

Hi. I've had painful periods for several years now (unfortunately it runs in our family). It does vary in severity from month to month but last time it was so painful I thought about cutting my arms to distract myself from the pain. Most months I throw up too, and therefore painkillers just get thrown up. I don't want to go on the pill, so was just wondering what others of you use. I've heard about these little patches you stick to your stomach and also TENS machines (which use electrical nerve stimulation to reduce pain). Are they effective? has anyone got any other methods? I'd be really grateful for any ideas as every month I have to take at least a day off college. Reply

You said you didn't want to go on the pill, but it does work really well. I used to get bad pains but they've practically stopped now. It might just be useful to go on for a few months if you have important exams or something like that. Reply

Go to your doctor, girl. I have taken mefenamic acid for the last 12 months, they make them lighter and virtually painless. Alternatively try feminax, although they can make you quite drowsy! Good luck, Becky. Reply

Thanks for both of your advice. Thing is, I went on the mefenamic acid a year ago and it worked for few months but then next two I just threw it up, so stopped. I could always try again though. As for the pill my doctor said that it might not be the best idea as two of my grandparents had heart problems (the pill increases risk of heart problems). Maybe I should take the risk? Reply

Hiya. Those lilets heat pads do work. They last for abut 6-8hrs when you stick them on. It can help ease the pain if you have to go out and can't use a hot water bottle. Also, my mum always used to make me drink warm cola when I had bad days. The bubbles in it help ease the pain in your tummy. Reply

I went on mefenamic acid for really bad period pains, and that only worked if I took it within an hour of it starting, so if it started in the night I was screwed. In May 2002 I went on the pill (mercilon) not had an ounce of pain since :D Clears up spots aswell! Fantastic! Reply
