Where you can make a difference

Do you believe that boys and girls are given fair chances in the world of sport?

Lulu - "Everyone always goes on about how this is the 21st century and how everyone is equal. How men and women are equal. But they're still not! It drives me crazy!! All these jokes on women make me so angry! And I'm fed up with all the guys I know making stupid comments on girls! I'm going to go mad! It's like we were put on earth to cook and clean and make babies, but we were given too much brains! "

Charlie - "I think that girls and boys should be given the same chances to be able to get involved in every sport. "

Ellis - "I don't agree that only boys should play rugby and football. I think that if a girl wants to play rugby or football then good on them!"

Mia - "I don't think girls and boys are given fair chances in the world of sport. Girls can play football and rugby, but not with boys at our school, because they are 'contact' sports, and if England's Women's team won, say the world cup, it wouldn't be a big deal like it is if the men's team even if they qualify."

Do boys get more chance because stereotypically boys enjoy sport more?

Moto - "The teachers probably think that the girls can cope with what the boys are doing."

Laura - "At my secondary school, there are more extra-curricular activities for boys. There's loads of football, basketball, rugby etc (which I agree, should be single-sex) but there's no trampolining club and no netball team (but there IS a basket ball team of boys)"

Do boys and girls get to play the same sports at school? Should girls get to play football, and should boys have to play netball and do gymnastics?

Charlie - "I think it's bad that the genders are separated (in sports when they don't have to be), because the girls that are better at sport don't get given a challenge, which is especially prominent when you compare the times achieved in the PE lessons, and the times run on Sports day, where middle-distance races are mixed to save time. I understand that some sports after 11 have to be single-sex, but completely segregating boys and girls is not the answer, because it restricts the sporting skills of both genders."

Jess & Jen -"Girls should be given the same chance. In primary school we always did P.E with the boys. Now were in secondary we don't."

Laura - "In my Primary and Secondary schools, in the kind of PE lesson's where it's dance or trampolining the lessons were mixed, but when it's a sport like football or hockey or basketball, it's always been girl v. girls and boys v. boys, even in Primary. Then again, in yr 3/4, nearly all the girls still had this thing of "Eww! boys are disgusting weird little aliens, we should keep away from them as much as possible!" so we thought it was a good idea at the time!"

Mullet - "I wish girls were allowed to play rugby, its so unfair."

Eleanor - "They aren't. Thee are very few sports clubs, and that around in my area that aren't basketball or gymnastics. Recently myself and my friend set up a girls soccer team and we now have 24 players, and we set it up in April! So its not like girls don't want to play sports. I go to an All-girls school so I don't know about PE but we get 1 PE lesson a week, my cousin goes to and all-boys school and he has 3 PE lessons a week!

And I think its rubbish about Boys being better at girls at sports, my soccer team played the boys team and we beat them 9-0,

Though I think boys do think girls are weak and go easy on them when they're playing them coz my cousins used to do that but then after a while they finally started playing normally."

Should PE lessons be mixed or single sex? Do mixed lessons make boys look bad, or help sporty girls to perform better? Do boys play to rough to mix with girls in some sports? What is your school's PE policy?

Charlie"At our school, all lower-school PE is single-sex, meaning that the sports chosen also work out to be very sexist. Girls aren't allowed to play football or rugby, and end up doing dance and gymnastics. The only sport run together for lower school is cross-country, because it takes place out of school, although when we get there they're often separated, so the only time that it can be guaranteed is the trials. I am really pleased that GCSE PE lessons are mixed, apart from football, rugby, rounders and netball, because it gives girls and boys a chance to learn off each other. I understand that some sports after 11 have to be single-sex, but completely segregating boys and girls is not the answer, because it restricts the sporting skills of both genders."

And how about on international level? Should there be more chances for experienced female international athletes to compete against men? And how about female marathon runners getting male pace makers.

In some sports men don't like competing against women ,even if they're on a reasonably level playing field. There's a dispute at the moment about whether 14-year old Yorkshire golf star Kieren should be able to play against senior male rivals. Should girls get the chance to compete against boys in sports in which they're not at a disadvantage?

Bonnie - "I think girls should play golf against the boys! I think the reason the boys don't want the girls to play is because they know that the girls will win!"

Lily - "I think that it's unfair to judge someone by their gender or age and if women can play every other sport why should golf be any different?"

Sk8rboy - "I play golf for my local club and the person I play with the most is a girl, I may have a handicap half as much as hers but we still play and enter competitions together."

Absy - "I think its sexist what the male golfers said!! I hate golf, but its not fair on the girls who do enjoy it."

Penny - "I think the fact that men don't want women to play golf against them shows that they are just afraid of women beating them and quashing their male pride."

Paris - "I think that the fact that men don't want women to pplay golf with them shows that they are scared that the women will be better than them at it and feel intimidated."

Gambino - "I think that the women should only be allowed to play with he men, if the men can play in the Women's games to. But I don't see that happeningWomen's games to. But I don't see that happening."

Chappers - "Women golfers shouldn't 100% not be allowed 2 play with men golfers because they are just not good enough."

Lulley [to Chappers] - "You're so sexist. (and I'm male)"

   Peanut [to Chappers] - "coughsexistcough"

Cookie [to Chappers] - "I'd love to see you take on Kieren, or many other young female golfers. In some sports men would have an unfair handicap against women, but golf is a sport that both sexes can play together. I'd be interested to discover what evidence you have to back up your conclusion."

Are boys and girls given the same chances in sport at school?
