Where you can make a difference

What do you think of our athletics chances at the Olympics next month?
Charlie - "I'm not convinced that we're even going to get a medal in the sprints, but if we do it'll be Gardner. I know Campbell fancies himself to get back on the rostrum, but he's getting on a bit, and he's not as cool and calm. It matters a lot to him what other people think of him, and to be British number1, and I don't think he is anymore. In some ways he's lucky to be fit and to be selected. He's a championship performer, but that may not be enough this time around. He may scrape something in either the 100m or the 200m, but I doubt it'll be gold, and I doubt it'll be in both. Gardner might snatch something in the 100m, but first he has to have decent heats, and as he's been injured he may not manage to keep it up to the final. As for the women, we'll be lucky if they both get to the final, let alone into the medals. I think the Men's 4x100m has a chance though, as do both the 4x400m"
Cassie - "Lewis-Francis probably wont make the final never mind get a medal. Gardener isn't fast enough to do anything special, he's a great 60m runner but only a decent international 100m. I think Darren Campbell is Britain's best chance to do well even though he probably wont medal, He always produces the fast times at the big championships even though before these he doest look that good."
Lora - "I think that anyone has a chance because they can pull it out on the day: All the British have potential, but all the other athletes have achieved so our chances are looking dim. We will get a male sprinting medal though, in either 100m or 200m"
Karl - "Judging by yesterday's [London Grand Prix, Crystal Palace] performance in the men's 100m the Brits won't even reach the final let alone get a medal."
Char - "It was good to see Lee McConnell doing well at Crystal Palace."
Lora - "We have Paula Radcliffe and Kelly Holmes to bring back some medals."
Charlotte - "I think we have a chance in the hepthalon. I think Kelly Sotherton could come home with a bronze medal, although she says she's only aiming for the top 8. Her PBs have improved dramatically this season, and she's looking good in most of the individual events. It's a real shame she didn't get the long jump "A" standard."
Schumi - "I think Paula Radcliffe has an excellent chance of winning. I think for everyone it is going to be up to who performs the best on the day because many of the events are wide open this year and so it is going to come down to the person who deals best under the pressure and who gets everything together right."
Amy - "Men's 100m - we'll be lucky if they all reach the final! Marathon record - not sure if Paula's in the kind of shape to break the record, but I think she'll win it. It's Kelly's last Olympics (she said so herself) so I think she will do both - hard to say where she's more likely to get a medal (could get 2)."
Leonie - "I think we will do quite well in the Olympics this year. I think Kelly Holmes has a good chance of winning her races. I think Kelly Holmes will do well and bring home two gold medals. The GB TEAM 100m will do well. I think in the 4x100m we will come 4th in the final. If we beat the USA I think we will come 2nd or 3rd. Come ON ENGLAND TEAM U CAN DO IT.BEAT THE USA."
Hayley - "I personally think Steve Backley has had his better day! He is retiring soon isn't he? I like our chances in the mens' 100m because we have Darren Campbell (so fit!), Jason Gardener and Mark Lewis-Francis. We have Paula of course! Jade Johnson, Chris Tomlinson etc... I think we are going to do better than we did last Olympics!"
Holly - "I don't think we'll do as well as last time. I mean, we've lost Colin Jackson and Jonathon Edwards. I don't think Jade Johnson's going to get into the medals: she'll be lucky if she gets into the final. Remember, she may have won at Crystal Palace, but she didn't even jump the A Standard to win that. The winner will be someone who'd jumped the standard consistently. Tomlinson may get a minor medal if he gets it right on the day, but I'm not over-hopeful for him. I agree about Steve, but he thinks there's still a massive throw in there, and it would be wonderful to see him go out with a bang."
Jodie
- "I think between them our sprinters may conjure up
a relay medal, and perhaps one individual medal, but I'm not confident that many
of them are even going to reach the final. Campbell is a very different runner
to 4 years ago. He used to be so relaxed and calm, but, well, he's too self-critical,
and when you're running lots of rounds if you qualify you just have to put it
behind you and move on, and not dwell. He's so caught up in being the British
number1 that he forgets to perform to the best of his own ability. I think if he
got a final without the other in he could do OK, but I think Gardener could last
longer than him, because he's had the boost from the indoors, and he's not
over-raced: he's more relaxed. I think our best short sprint hope is Christian Malcolm
in the 200m though; at least he's got somewhere this season, and I believe he
can get it right on the night."
What do you think the athletes from other nations?
Charlie - "I think Kim Collins is going to get it, because he's kept out of the limelight, and he's always very cool and focussed, and he's not going to let it all get to him the way some of the others will."
Mikey - "My tip is Maurice [Greene]. He might be getting on a bit but I think he has still got 1 more title in him. The 100m final will finish 1)Greene 2)Collins 3)Lewis-Francis."
Cassie - "Even though Kim Collins won the World Championships last year hell find it much tougher this year and I think is very unlikely to win. His times last year wouldn't have got close to medals in some of the World Championships. The standard in the 100m is higher this year with Maurice Greene, Powell and Gatlin, just to name a few all going easily sub 10 sec pace."
Sam - "I think that Asafa Powell will put on some pressure, and I think he could win the 100m."
Char - "I think Bekele is the best runner in the World at the moment. Even though he's been injured, I think he can do it in Athens."
Charlotte - "Carolina Kluft is amazing, and if she doesn't get gold I'll eat... something. She's in a class of her own, and it would take something going horribly wrong to take the medals out of her grasp."
Schumi - "Christian Olssen is AMAZING, he's a total dude! I hope he does well as he definitely does hav the potential to do so. Anyway, I think all the events will be very exciting and I think its anyone's game even though in the odd event such as the pole vault there has been athletes who have been incredibly dominant. But for most events it seems very close! It will be good."
What about in other Olympic sports? Who do you think could win?
Schumi - "I think Beth Tweddle has an excellent chance of winning after the Commonwealth Gold. In the swimming I really hope James Hickman will be able to win the fly but I think it will be tough as there are just so many young swimmers out there who are so strong and it will be hard for him to beat Michael Phelps! but I'm sure if he gets his start right and makes no mistakes, he will be in with a good chance."
Leonie - "We will do well in the swimming."
Sally - "I love watching the gymnasts because they're great."
Which sportspeople from overseas do you think are gonig to come up with the medals?
Schumi - "I think the swimming will be very close especially with Ian Thorpe, who was so dominant in the last games, and the very young Michael Phelps having just taken over as the number 1 and both swimmers want to break the record and win 8 gold medals in the games. I wanna watch all the events (especially swimming ,gymnastics, athletics, table tennis, canoeing/kayaking, hockey, triathlon, cycling and rowing!! Also the diving (though I always sit half behind a pillow because I hate the waiting and the thought that as the diver is falling down, they may hit their head on the boards!!)"
