Pregnancy Testing

If you've had unprotected sex in the last 5 days you are still in time to use Emergency Contraception.

If you think you could be pregnant, you will need to get a pregnancy test. Pregnancy tests are very reliable and can be done 2 to 3 weeks after unprotected sex, or on the first day of a missed period. Before this time, the level of hormones produced by the pregnancy is too low to show up on the test and you may get a 'false negative' result.

You can pay to have a test at:

Many pharmacies offer pregnancy testing and sell home pregnancy tests. These are very reliable but it is important that you follow the instructions exactly if you do a test at home.

It’s best to have a pregnancy test done by your GP or a centre, because it’s free, confidential (they won’t tell anyone) and expert staff are on hand to give you advice.

If the test is positive....

If your test result is positive, see your GP as soon as possible. He'll be able to talk you through what to do next - in confidence.

Tell someone. If you can possibly tell your parents’ or carers’, then do, you might be surprised at how understanding they are even if they’re shocked at first.
