Where you can make a difference

Lucy: "This is especially for you to moan about periods."

NB: Cookie: "Because of the large numbers of people in our problems section contacting us only to moan about periods, here is your special page girls. You can moan about them, moan about moaning about them, or just share experiences!"

Lucy (July 2004 Issue Idea) - "I think periods are horrible. I don’t like wearing skirts when I’m on and I feel very self-conscious, and I think they’re gross, to be honest! "

Lizzie - "I feel quite hard done by because, although the average woman's menstrual cycle is allegedly 28 days, mine is 23. So I'm on my period for like 1 week in 3. Also, I always feel fat, ugly and spotty when I'm on: bleh!"

Laura - "Mine lasts for 7 days when I’m on and I get paranoid and self conscious: I feel like everyone is looking at me."

Michelle - "I’m 15 and haven’t started which some might say is good but I’m quite conscious of what’s actually going on!"

Claire - "I just started a few months ago and I’m 15. It’s such a pain though because it stops me from doing things I would have otherwise not given a second thought to doing.... like swimming."

Emmy - "No matter how much you complain and moan about your periods, you're going to have them for about 30 or 40 more years and you can't change that. Why don't you just accept it and get on with your life? I don't love my periods, I am just mature enough to realise that it's something that every girl has, I am no exception and I'll just have to get on with it."

Lisa - "I don't like it, but I don't see why it has to be such a bad thing for me not to hate my period, I have no reason to hate it. I don’t love my period, I accept it, and get on with my life.

If you think it is gross and it makes you self-conscious then that’s your own doing, I can understand those who suffer periods due to medical reasons, but those who complain about something they bring on themselves escapes me, sorry but that’s how it is and I think girls should be encouraged to accept their bodies rather than torture themselves because of long outdated social taboos, but if you want to carry on as you are then fine. Society and media do make you feel like that - it is them who say periods are gross and embarrassing, no one else. You make yourself feel that way, and as I said I don't see why you should whine about something you bring on yourself - if you don't like it then don't make yourself feel that way!"

Helen - "We’re all stuck with periods whether we like them or not, and no amount of complaining will change that so we might as well lie with them. I mean, I don't like my periods, and I'm alot happier when I'm not on my periods than when I am, but I guess we just have to slap on a pad, or stick in a tampon and get on with our lives!"

Natalie - "Periods might be annoying, but nothing is going to change the fact that we get them, so we might as well accept it."

Hanna - "They are a bloody nuisance sometimes, but every female has them and we have to live with them. I never know when I’m going to be on, they're still so irregular after almost two years but it just happens and there’s no point still complaining about them because they're not going to go away for another 30 - 40 years yet."

Amy - "I hate having my period; why do women get all the back aches, stomach aches, feeling bloated and ugly, and lads get nowt!! I don’t tend to wear skirts when I’m on because I’m self-concious too!"

Caz - "I don't like periods because I feel unclean but I don't feel self conscious. I accept them and they're a part of life that will last a LONG time."

Char - "I do enjoy a good moan about it, (and if everyone was being honest they would admit to moaning about it at one point too)."

Cookie - "Some of you have expressed a very sensible and Down-to-Earth approach towards this topic. It is true that, like it or not, we're stuck with them for a good few years get. The most important thing is to see the positive side. Although, yes, they're messy, and yes they're painful, at least you know you're normal, and that you're [most likely] not pregnant."
